CV photo size: why a passport picture fails the standard
When applying for a job in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, the standard CV photo measures 4.5 × 6 cm with an aspect ratio of 3:4. Using a standard 35 × 45 mm passport photo is a common mistake that makes the applicant appear too distant, as the two formats demand entirely different crops.
The distinction between the two formats goes beyond a few millimetres. The German passport photo is rigidly measured for biometric identification, focusing entirely on the face. A CV portrait is designed to convey competence and sympathy, requiring a wider crop that includes the shoulders.
Including a photo is voluntary in Germany under the 2006 General Equal Treatment Act, which allows compensation of up to three months' gross salary where discrimination is proven. It is still expected by 53 % of human resources managers, so the format is worth getting right.
Translating centimetres into pixels and DPI
A printed application requires a resolution of 300 DPI to avoid looking pixelated on paper. When uploading a digital application to a company portal, centimetres no longer matter, but the 3:4 aspect ratio remains crucial. Squashing a square image into a portrait frame will distort the face, making it look unnaturally long.
Rename the file to something like 'Firstname-Lastname-Bewerbungsfoto.jpg' rather than leaving it as 'IMG_4821.jpg'. The picture goes in the top right corner of the document, or on the left inside a coloured header bar.

Why a passport photo looks wrong on a CV
The biometric passport crop
A German passport photo measures exactly 35 × 45 mm, which is roughly a 7:9 ratio. The government mandates that the head height from chin to crown must be between 32 and 36 mm. The eyes must sit at approximately 60 % of the image height.
The expression must be neutral, the mouth closed, no teeth visible. That framing leaves almost no room for the shoulders.
The CV portrait crop
At 4.5 × 6 cm in a 3:4 ratio, the CV photo provides much more vertical space. The head should be centred and slightly raised, leaving some breathing room above the hair. Crucially, the crop should show the head and the shoulders, ending roughly at chest height.
This framing gives the face 70 to 80 % of the image and leaves the rest to the shoulders, so clothing choices still register. The eyes should sit on the upper third line, and a neutral grey or white background prints reliably.
Why you can no longer print your own passport photos
If you are looking up dimensions because you want to print a photo for a German identity document, the rules changed on 1 May 2025. A self-created file or a printed sheet from a drug store is no longer accepted for passports and national identity cards.
The photograph must now be taken at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt) for €6, or by a certified studio that transmits the encrypted file to the authorities. Getting a passport photo online is therefore no longer possible for official German IDs.
The 35 × 45 mm format rules still apply, though, for visa applications in many countries, for company identity badges, and wherever you simply need a formal neutral portrait.

A study by Willis and Todorov at Princeton University (2006) found that an observer forms a stable judgement about competence and sympathy after roughly 100 milliseconds of looking at a face. That judgement is formed before the reader has taken in a single line of your CV, which is the practical reason the frame is worth getting right.

Is a 35 × 45 mm passport photo too small for a CV?
Yes, it is generally considered too small. A passport picture focuses tightly on the face for biometric identification, lacking the space to show the shoulders and posture needed for a professional, approachable portrait.
What file format and size should I use for digital applications?
JPEG is universally accepted by application portals, as well as the sRGB colour space. Keep the file size between 200 KB and 500 KB. Many application portals cap the whole application PDF at 5 MB, which is the reason the picture itself should stay well below that.
How old can a CV photo be?
A CV photo should ideally be no older than one to two years. It must accurately reflect your current appearance. If you have changed your hair colour, gained or lost significant weight, or started wearing glasses, you need a new photograph.
