The short answer
A typical individual headshot session in the UK costs between £110 and £350. That is the range Whito, a UK research site, reports after checking 40 published UK price lists and rate cards in August 2026. The same study found walk-in sessions from £45 and premium London specialists at £745. Both ends are real prices, and they are different products, which is why a single average tells you very little.
People who have just been quoted feel the gap. A thread on r/jobs asked how much people actually spend on professional headshots, and the opening post said photographers near them wanted £350 to £450 for a proper session.
The UK price ladder
The table collects figures we could verify on 22 October 2026. All prices are in pounds, as published by the supplier or research site named in the last column.
| Route | Published price | What it covers | Source |
|---|
| Walk-in studio session | £45 to £110 | 15 to 20 minutes, one or more edited images | Whito, August 2026 |
| Express studio session | £95 excluding VAT | Ten minutes, one outfit, one retouched image, full usage rights | Headshot Company |
| Standard professional session | £110 to £350 | 30 to 90 minutes, 2 to 10 retouched images | Whito, August 2026 |
| Full studio session | £225 excluding VAT | One hour, three outfits, four retouched images, full usage rights | Headshot Company |
| London studio example | £99 including VAT | 45 minutes, six retouched images by email, extra images £10 each | FUJIFILM House of Photography |
| Premium London specialist | £375 to £745 | Longer session, more images, higher-end retouching | Whito, August 2026 |
| Team headshots, 10 or more people | £40 to £75 per head | Booked as a half or full day on site | Whito, August 2026 |
A photographer's own guide sorts the market into three bands: budget sessions of £50 to £100, mid-range sessions of £120 to £300 and premium work from £300. The bands overlap with Whito's. Watch the VAT: two rows above exclude it and one includes it.
How much London adds
Whito quotes Bark data that puts headshot photography at £125 an hour on average across the UK, from about £100 an hour in the North East to £165 in London. It also reports one photographer who publishes the same session at £180 in Manchester and £250 in London. That is a London premium of £70, or about 39 per cent, which is a useful rule of thumb when you compare a regional quote with a London one.
Compare cost per usable image
The session fee is the wrong number to compare. What you will use is the final retouched image, and packages include very different numbers of them. The arithmetic uses only the published figures above.
| Package | Images included | Fee | Fee per included image |
|---|
| Headshot Company express session | 1 | £95 excluding VAT | £95.00 |
| Headshot Company full session | 4 | £225 excluding VAT | £56.25 |
| FUJIFILM House of Photography, London | 6 | £99 including VAT | £16.50 |
| Whito standard session, best case | 10 | £110 | £11.00 |
| Whito standard session, worst case | 2 | £350 | £175.00 |
The last column is why two quotes that look similar can differ by a factor of ten. The Headshot Company full session bundles an hour and three outfits, so a higher price per image can still be fair if you want that. Whito adds that extra retouched images typically cost £10 to £25 each, so ask for that price before you book. Ask about usage rights too: a shoot fee usually covers an initial licence for limited use, and wider use can cost more.
What the forums say about paying
The r/jobs replies were sceptical. One person said they saw no point in spending £400 on one LinkedIn photo, and another would spend that money on things that help the search more directly. A reply from someone who says they hire made a different point, that a headshot does not belong on the CV at all. Some of the cheapest suggestions were an in-house photo taken at work for free and a high-street photo shop. A few replies recommended named AI tools at about £30, and several of those read like promotion, so we leave them out.
A similar thread on r/careeradvice asked whether $400 for a LinkedIn photographer is worth it. It is in dollars, so only the question carries over. The honest answer from both threads is that it depends on whether you need the photo elsewhere too, such as for a website, a press page or acting.
What to ask before you book
- How many retouched images are included, and what does each extra one cost?
- What is the licence, and does it cover your website, LinkedIn and print?
- How long is the session, and is it one set-up or several backgrounds?
- When do the images arrive, and do you see the unedited choices?
- Is VAT included in the quoted price?
- Can you bring a second outfit without paying more?
Where an AI portrait sits on this ladder
Profilfoto KI builds a photorealistic portrait from your own selfies in the style you choose, such as business or LinkedIn, and no studio appointment is involved. The first photo is free and carries a watermark, so you can judge the likeness before paying anything. After that the packages are one-off payments with no subscription: 2 photos for €4.99, 12 for €29 and 40 for €79. Creation usually takes three to five minutes. Uploaded selfies are stored in Frankfurt and deleted automatically after 90 days at the latest. The payment page is in German or English, and the privacy policy is available in English on our privacy page.
This is a different product from a photographed session, so it does not belong on the same line of the ladder. We charge in euros and do not convert, so compare the offers by what they contain. A studio session gives you a photograph taken by a person on the day, which is the right answer for actors, for a team day on site, and for any case where a physical background or a signed licence matters. A portrait made from selfies suits a profile photo that you need soon and may want in several styles. It is not a biometric or official passport photo.
Questions people ask
How much are people actually spending on professional headshots in the UK?
Published prices run from about £45 for a walk-in session to £745 at a premium London specialist, and Whito puts a typical session at £110 to £350. A forum poster was quoted £350 to £450 locally, so the top of the range is common.
Is it worth paying £400 for a LinkedIn headshot?
Forum replies were doubtful unless you need the photo elsewhere too. A mid-range session with several retouched images and a licence can cost less than half of that, so compare the price per image.
What does a £99 headshot in London include?
FUJIFILM House of Photography charges £99 including VAT for a 45-minute session with six retouched images sent by email. Extra images are £10 each.
Is a headshot more expensive in London?
Yes. One photographer publishes the same session at £180 in Manchester and £250 in London. Bark data cited by Whito gives about £100 an hour in the North East and £165 in London.
What do company headshots cost per person?
Whito reports £40 to £75 a head for teams of ten or more, booked as a half or full day on site. Individual sessions typically cost £110 to £350.
When is an AI portrait cheaper than a studio session?
When you need a profile photo and not a photographer on the day. The first photo is free with a watermark, and 2 photos cost €4.99. For actors and team days a studio is usually the better route.
