Cabin crew CV photo: what is documented and what is only repeated

Guides on cabin crew photos sound very sure of themselves, down to the centimetre. This page sets the airline's own photo guidelines beside what other websites say, so you know which sizes to trust and which to check first.

Why this question differs from an ordinary CV

In the UK an ordinary CV has no photograph. Cabin crew recruitment is one of the few areas where applicants are told to expect photos, and the advice online is confident and specific, so it is worth asking where that confidence comes from.

We looked for the airline's own wording first. Emirates recruits in cities around the world, including Cork in Ireland when we read its careers page, and it publishes a separate Photo Guidelines PDF. That file is the most detailed official document we found. It carries no date, so check that your invitation points to the same version.

What Emirates publishes

The careers page sets a minimum height of 160 cm, a reach of 212 cm and an age of 21, asks for a year of hospitality or customer service experience, and says no tattoos may be visible in uniform. For the recruitment day you bring a valid ID and keep digital copies of your English CV, education certificate and passport. It does not list a photo. Assessment days are held in person.

The Photo Guidelines PDF is where the photos appear. It says you must upload one full-length formal photo, one identical passport-sized photo and two smart casual photos, all taken within the past month. It has separate pages for women and for men, each with its own list of grooming and clothing points. Both pages say the formal photo cannot be altered or photoshopped, that the light should be good with no shadows, and that the picture must be sharp and in focus.

Official sizes against third-party claims

The table sets the Photo Guidelines PDF against a photo-studio guide and a coaching blog that describe Emirates photo requirements. The right-hand column is what commercial sites claim, not a published rule.

DetailEmirates Photo Guidelines PDFThird-party claims
Number of photosFour: formal full-length, matching passport-sized, and two smart casual (full-length and head to waist)Headshot plus full-length photo

Age of the photosTaken within the past monthNot covered in the parts we read

Two of the commonly repeated figures do not match the official file. The 13 × 18 cm print size is not in it, and the passport-sized photo is listed as 4.5 × 3.5 cm, not the other way round. The 500 KB limit does not appear either. A limit may exist on the upload form, and the form in front of you wins over any article.

What candidates report

Forum posts show how loose the picture is in practice. On r/emirates, someone asked whether to put a photo on the CV for Emirates, and the answers split. One said to follow the instructions, since an applicant who skips a simple request should not expect an invitation. Another said to keep the photo only if you think it strengthens the application. On r/cabincrewcareers, an applicant asked whether the photo needs a professional photographer or can be taken in sunlight. A reply said it need not be professional, but that good light and the grooming rules matter.

A third thread, from a candidate rejected at the CV stage by Emirates and Etihad, drew many comments about the picture itself, from the tie to the lighting. Others pointed at a two-column CV layout that online systems can scramble. In an r/emiratescareers thread on the newer guidelines, one candidate said they only wanted one picture in business attire and another said they had shot theirs by the hotel lifts on a phone at the open day. Another asked whether the guidelines were only now being implemented. The forum reports disagree on how many photos are asked for at which stage, so read your own invitation.

UK airlines

We read the cabin crew pages of easyJet, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways on 22 October 2026, and none of the three mentions a photo. A forum post on r/cabincrewcareers says that easyJet's email after the online application asked for a passport photo and a cabin crew admin form, so a requirement can appear later in the process. A photo studio that sells cabin crew packages claims that online applications at several UK airlines require photos. We could not verify that from the airlines' own pages, so treat it as a claim.

How to prepare without guessing

  1. Open the invitation or application for the airline and the specific recruitment event, and look for a photo field or an attached guideline. Copy the size and format from there.
  2. If it only says that photos are required, ask the recruiter before you pay for anything. A one-line question costs less than a studio session.
  3. Take the photos in good even light, in clothes that match the dress code of the event, with the hairstyle you will wear on the day.
  4. Keep a larger copy, because you can shrink a big file to fit a limit but cannot enlarge a small one.

At the assessment day the recruiter sees your face directly, and the photograph has done its job or failed. A picture that makes you look different from how you will walk in looks like a mistake.

Where Profilfoto KI fits, and where it does not

Profilfoto KI builds a photorealistic portrait from your own selfies in the style you choose, such as business or LinkedIn, and no studio appointment is involved. The first photo is free and carries a watermark, so you can judge the likeness before paying anything. After that the packages are one-off payments with no subscription: 2 photos for €4.99, 12 for €29 and 40 for €79. Creation usually takes three to five minutes. Uploaded selfies are stored in Frankfurt and deleted automatically after 90 days at the latest. The payment page is in German or English, and the privacy policy is available in English on our privacy page.

For cabin crew we would use it for your LinkedIn profile, not for the airline photos. Emirates says the formal photo cannot be altered, an AI portrait redraws skin, light and background, and we do not produce full-length pictures. For the airline photos, a friend with a phone and a window is enough. It is not a biometric or official passport photo.

Questions people ask

Do cabin crew need a photo on their CV in the UK?

It depends on the airline and the form. The easyJet, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways pages we read do not mention a photo, but forum posts say photos can be requested later in the process. Emirates publishes photo guidelines for its application.

What size are the photos Emirates asks for?

Its Photo Guidelines PDF lists 10 × 15 cm for the full-length and casual photos and 4.5 × 3.5 cm for the passport-sized one, all taken within the past month. Use the size on your own form if it differs.

Can I edit or retouch the cabin crew photos?

Not the formal photo. The Emirates PDF says it cannot be altered or photoshopped. Treat the other photos the same way.

Do I need a professional photographer for the application photos?

We found no requirement for one in the Emirates PDF. A forum reply said professional photos are not necessary, but good light and the grooming rules matter.

Should I put a photo on my CV when applying to Emirates?

Forum answers split. The careers page lists the CV, certificate and passport copy for the assessment day and leaves the photos to the separate Photo Guidelines PDF. Follow the instructions in your own invitation.

Can I use an AI photo for an airline application?

We would not. The recruiter will meet you in person, and Emirates says the formal photo cannot be altered. An AI portrait suits LinkedIn better.
