Spotify profile picture size and the mobile-only change
A Spotify listener profile picture is rendered at 300 × 300 px. Spotify accepts PNG or JPG files up to 4 MB, but the upload itself can only be changed in the mobile app. The desktop app and Web Player display the picture without offering an upload control.
That distinction matters because a square source file does not always look square once Spotify displays it. The app crops the listener picture into a circle, while the Web Player sidebar shows it as a square.
The image can also appear at roughly 64 px in the desktop Now Playing hover card. A face therefore needs to remain recognisable at a small size, rather than relying on fine detail near the edge of the frame.
What size should a Spotify profile picture be?
For a listener account, Spotify renders the picture at 300 × 300 px. PNG and JPG are accepted, provided the file is no larger than 4 MB. If you want more room for a later zoom on the profile page, the source guidance recommends delivering 640 × 640 px.
That larger source does not turn the displayed listener picture into a larger image. It means Spotify has to soften the image less while rendering the smaller result. Keep the important part of the portrait near the centre, since the app uses a circular crop.

Why Spotify only lets you upload from a phone
On iOS and Android
Spotify treats the mobile app as the place to change a listener profile picture. This is a product decision, not a fault in the desktop version, and the setting cannot be switched on from outside Spotify.
Open Your Library at the bottom right, select the profile icon at the top left, tap the current profile picture, then choose Change photo. That is the direct route for a listener account.
On desktop
The desktop app and Web Player can show your current listener picture, but neither provides a direct upload. This is why looking through desktop settings does not reveal a missing button.
There are three workarounds, each with a different limit. A linked Facebook account can pass its picture to Spotify at the next sync, Spotify for Artists changes only the artist image, and a Help Centre form may take some days.
Do not use the artist specification for a listener account
A Spotify for Artists profile is separate from the ordinary listener profile. Its picture is managed through Spotify for Artists and the recommended size is 1500 × 1500 px. The artist picture appears square in an Editorial Card and round in the Now Playing display.
Changing that artist image does not replace the picture on a listener account. It is useful to keep the two paths distinct before choosing a file, especially if you are trying to solve a listener upload from a computer.
What not to upload, and why
The default Spotify avatar shows only initials. A file as small as 80 × 80 px becomes pixelated because Spotify cannot upscale it. A centred portrait with enough surrounding space gives the circular crop more room to work.
A favourite artist's press photograph creates a copyright conflict and can read like a fake account. Album artwork is label protected and can also be read as a fake artist marker. Spotify also does not show profile visitors, so there is no feature that tells you who has viewed your account.
The Spotify rule does not apply to every music service
Music services use different profile routes and crops. Apple Music takes a 512 × 512 picture from the Apple ID account and has no separate upload slot. YouTube Music uses an 800 × 800 image from the Google account, while Tidal has its own 400 × 400 round profile upload.
