Executive headshots: what US photographers charge and when AI is enough

An executive headshot costs a few hundred dollars for one session and thousands for a leadership day. Here are published prices side by side, and a plain rule for when a portrait made from your own selfies does the job.

Where an executive headshot has to work

A studio that sells executive portraits lists six places the photo must hold up: the corporate bio page, the investor relations page, the press kit, a speaker bio, the annual report and LinkedIn. Each crops the picture differently, and each is read by someone deciding how much to trust you. LinkedIn says members with a profile photo receive up to 2X more profile views, so the cheapest of those places is also the one people check first.

A founder who is mostly found on LinkedIn needs one clean, current portrait. A chief executive whose face sits in a printed annual report needs a portrait that communications has approved, with a license that covers print.

What US photographers publish

Every figure below comes from the photographer's own page, read on 25 October 2026. These are published starting points, not averages, and most studios quote team jobs individually.

City and studioWhat the price coversPublished price
New York, James Maher PhotographyIndividual corporate session$250 to $600
New York, James Maher PhotographyExecutive or editorial portrait session$400 to $1,000+
New York, City HeadshotsClassic: 20 to 40 minutes, 2 retouched photos$299
New York, City HeadshotsSignature: 1 to 2 hours, 3 retouched photos$599
Westport, Connecticut, N. Lalor PhotographyStudio session with retouching of the chosen image$450
Dallas, Metroplex HeadshotsIn-studio session; each additional image $150$300
Dallas, Metroplex HeadshotsOn-location company headshots within the metro area$1,250
San Francisco, Edelson PhotographyTeam session, half day or full dayFrom $2,000, or $3,500 to $4,000
Profilfoto KI2, 12 or 40 AI photos from your selfies, one payment€4.99, €29 or €79

Two readings stand out. In the New York list, an executive session starts above where a standard corporate session ends. The jump to thousands of dollars comes with team days and high-production shoots, and Edelson says executive portraits with a large production cost thousands. The Profilfoto KI prices are in euros and are not converted. The first photo is free and carries a watermark, so you can test the likeness first.

Four lines that change a quote

Ask about these four lines before you compare totals.

  1. Retouched images. City Headshots includes 2 retouched photos in its $299 package and 3 in the $599 one, while Metroplex charges $150 for each extra image. Maher advises asking what "includes retouching" means, because a batch filter and real retouching are not the same work.
  2. Usage rights. City Headshots states that full usage rights are included. A pricing guide from Capturely lists commercial usage rights at $100 to $500 or more as an add-on at some studios. Get the license in writing before a photo goes into print.
  3. Makeup and grooming. City Headshots lists professional makeup at an extra $125 for men and $175 for women on the Classic package. Capturely puts hair and makeup at $50 to $200 per person.
  4. Travel and location. City Headshots adds $350 to shoot at your location, and Metroplex sells on-location work as a company package.

Book a photographer, or use AI?

Choose a photographer when

  • You are one of several leaders whose photos will sit side by side. A photographer can light everyone the same way, and Maher names consistency across a team as what the higher price buys.
  • The photo goes into print, investor material or a press kit and you need a written license.
  • You need full-length, group or on-location pictures. Profilfoto KI makes individual portraits only and has no group or team photos.

An AI portrait is enough when

  • Your main audience is LinkedIn, an email signature, a speaker bio or a company page where you control the file.
  • Your current photo is years old and you want several options to compare. The 12-photo package exists for that.
  • You travel or have no free day for a studio, and you accept that the result is a portrait generated from your selfies, not a photograph taken of you.

One check applies to both routes: put the result next to a recent photo without filters. If a colleague would hesitate to say it is you, do not publish it.

What people complain about

In a thread where assistants described their own work headshots, the answers fell into a few groups. Many get a portrait through the employer, shot once a year or every few months. Others have never been offered one, or still use a photo from a job six years back. One person's badge photo became the email header picture, and the Teams photo stayed stuck. Another described an awkward angle that made one eye look larger.

Photographers in a separate thread say some people will dislike their picture however it is lit, and that portraits of different people need to look comparable. That second point is the real argument for a shared shoot day.

The practical lesson is to find out who controls the photo on each system. Email, chat, badge and website are often set by IT or communications, not by you. If your employer runs a photographer day, use it for the internal set, and keep a portrait you control for LinkedIn and outside bios.

Five checks before the photo goes live

  1. Compare it with a recent photo, in good light and without a filter.
  2. Use the same portrait on LinkedIn, the website bio and the speaker page, so the person in the room matches all three.
  3. Shrink it to chat-avatar size. Your face should still read first.
  4. Match clothes and background to your industry. Our guide on what to wear for a headshot covers that.
  5. Ask whether your employer has brand rules for leadership photos.

How Profilfoto KI handles an executive portrait

You upload between 1 and 10 of your own selfies for each generation and pick a style. Business Studio and LinkedIn Modern are the starting styles, and the paid packages add Executive Suite and others. The uploaded selfies are stored in Frankfurt and deleted automatically after 90 days at the latest. Images are generated through the API of a large US provider, and the payment page is in German or English. It does not make passport or official ID photos.

Questions about executive headshots

How much does an executive headshot cost in the US?

Published single-session prices in the cities above run from $250 to $600 for a corporate session and $400 to $1,000 or more for an executive session in New York, $300 in Dallas and $450 in Westport. A leadership team day costs from $2,000 in San Francisco.

Can I use an AI portrait on my company leadership page?

That depends on your employer, not on the tool. If the company has a brand standard or a photographer day, ask communications first. Whatever you publish should look like you today.

How often should an executive update the headshot?

No rule exists. Some employers in the r/ExecutiveAssistants thread shoot new portraits yearly, while others have photos six years old. Update when a colleague would hesitate to say the photo is you.

Does Profilfoto KI make team or group photos?

No. It makes individual portraits from your own selfies. If you need one consistent leadership set shot under the same light, book a photographer.

Is the first photo really free?

Yes. The first photo is free and carries a watermark, so you can check the likeness before you buy. Paid packages are a one-time payment: 2 photos for €4.99, 12 photos for €29 or 40 photos for €79, with no subscription.
