AI LinkedIn photos, checked for the platform

An AI LinkedIn photo has to work after LinkedIn makes it small.

Generating a polished portrait is only part of the job. LinkedIn changes the crop and reduces the image to four display sizes. A picture that looks convincing at full size can still fail in a 32-pixel comment.

4 sizes
LinkedIn displays the photo at 200, 100, 56 and 32 pixels.
400 to 800 px
400 × 400 px is the minimum. 800 × 800 px is optimal for Retina displays.

For LinkedIn, the useful question is whether your face remains clear after the platform crops and scales it. The following checks use personal-profile specifications rather than a generic headshot brief.

The display test

Your LinkedIn portrait is reduced four times

LinkedIn scales a personal profile photo to 200 × 200 pixels in the desktop header, 100 × 100 in search results, 56 × 56 in the news feed and 32 × 32 in comments. At 32 pixels, the face and expression have to remain easy to read.

Upload at least 400 × 400 pixels and use 800 × 800 pixels for the optimal Retina result, where each display stage is doubled. LinkedIn accepts JPG or PNG up to 8 MB. An 800 × 800 JPG at Quality 85 is typically around 100 to 200 KB.

Where LinkedIn shows itDisplay sizeWhat the reduction means
Desktop profile header200 × 200 pxThis is the largest personal-profile display.
Search results100 × 100 pxThe face must remain distinct.
News feed56 × 56 pxSmall background details recede.
Comments32 × 32 pxA crowded crop can obscure the person.
Crop and upload format

A square upload does not stay square on LinkedIn

What belongs inside the circle

LinkedIn displays the profile picture as a circle, so the corners of a square upload are cut away. Keep the important area, especially your face, within a circle no wider than 90 per cent of the image width.

A neutral background, business casual clothing or a suit, a slight smile, sharp eyes and a shoulders-to-forehead crop are the stated cues that work. Mirror selfies, sunglasses, group pictures, wedding pictures and anime or cartoon avatars do not serve the same professional purpose.

What LinkedIn accepts

Use JPG for a photographic portrait or PNG where a graphic needs transparency. LinkedIn does not accept WebP or AVIF. An iPhone HEIC file must be converted before upload, otherwise it returns an unsupported-file-format error.

Profilfoto KI delivers a 1024 × 1024 JPG, so its output meets the format and size requirements without a further editing step. Check the circular crop before saving it as your profile photo.

Why the small version matters

The image is part of a very short first scan

A 2024 study found that profiles with a clear headshot received 21 times more profile views and nine times more connection requests than profiles without a picture. These figures describe a clear headshot, not a promise that an AI image alone produces the same outcome.

LinkedIn Talent Insights says that recruiters scan a profile in under three seconds. A central face, sharp eyes and a simple crop are therefore more relevant than details that disappear in search, the feed or comments.

An honest limit

When an AI LinkedIn photo is the weaker choice

×An AI portrait is not a substitute for every kind of photograph. If you need a picture that shows a particular real setting, such as your workplace, workshop or team, a selfie-based result cannot provide that situation. It also adds nothing if you already have a current, sharp studio portrait.

Profilfoto KI is a small German provider, so it would be misleading to present an AI output as a universal replacement for a photographer or real workplace photography. Its role is narrower: creating a LinkedIn-format portrait from a selfie when you do not already have a current studio image. Our AI headshot versus photographer guide covers that separate choice. A company briefing several colleagues at once faces a different question again, because those portraits are seen side by side rather than one at a time; our guide to business headshots for a whole team sets out what changes.

Frequently asked questions

AI LinkedIn photo requirements

What size should an AI LinkedIn profile picture be?

LinkedIn needs at least 400 × 400 pixels for a personal profile photo, while 800 × 800 pixels is optimal for Retina displays. Upload a JPG or PNG below the 8 MB file limit so that LinkedIn can scale it for each of its display sizes.

Why does a photo that looks good at full size fail on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn also reduces the profile photo to 100 × 100 pixels in search, 56 × 56 pixels in the news feed and 32 × 32 pixels in comments. A full-size picture can therefore look fine while a distant face, crowded crop or small detail disappears at the smallest display stage.

Can I upload an iPhone HEIC image or a WebP file?

No. LinkedIn accepts JPG and PNG for this use, but it does not accept WebP or AVIF. A HEIC image from an iPhone must be converted before upload, otherwise LinkedIn returns an unsupported-file-format error.

How should an AI portrait be cropped for LinkedIn?

LinkedIn applies a circular crop, which removes the corners of a square file. Keep your face within a circle no wider than 90 per cent of the image width, and use a shoulder-to-forehead crop with sharp eyes so the person stays clear at smaller sizes.

When should I use a real photograph instead of an AI LinkedIn photo?

Use a real photograph when the image must show a particular workplace, workshop or team, because a selfie-based result cannot provide that real situation. A new generated image is also unnecessary if you already own a current, sharp studio portrait.
