Can a teacher refuse to have their photo published on the school website, and what should the headshot look like if they agree?
In Germany, under the GDPR, yes. The German source cites the data protection authority of North Rhine-Westphalia: the school asks before it publishes a teacher's photo, and one blanket consent at the start of employment does not last indefinitely. Article 7 requires the school to be able to prove the consent, and Article 7(3) allows withdrawal at any time without a reason. That guidance comes from one German state, so other states and other countries may set different rules.
After a withdrawal, the school must remove the image from its website and platforms, while yearbooks that were already printed are a separate case. A ruling documented by datenschutz-praxis.de treats website and yearbook as separate publications needing separate consent. The German source names no rule that obliges a teacher to upload a platform picture. If your school says otherwise, ask for the written rule.
